Kevin's journey with German Shepherds began in the nineteen eighties when he purchased his first four dogs from a breeder in Germany — the same breeder his aunt Irene and uncle Leonard were stationed with after World War Two. Through family connections and visits, he played with their dogs as a child and learned early what it meant to build trust and partnership with a German Shepherd. That foundation shaped everything. He carried that passion when he moved to North Carolina in nineteen ninety-four, where nearly a decade with Outward Bound as head chef, outdoor leader, and search and rescue handler taught him something crucial — nature and dogs heal people in ways nothing else can. In two thousand and four, he established Abbey Kennels in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, where he spent eighteen years breeding and training elite German Shepherds. Then in January two thousand and twenty-two, he relocated to Virginia and founded S.G.S.D. Elite Guardian Service Dogs with a singular mission: I train dogs to heal people — the same way they healed me.
